01 / ABOUT THE PLACE
Baked individually in single-piece handheld iron molds—a method known as "tennen" or single-cast baking—the taiyaki at Naniwaya stands out for its light, remarkably crisp batter. Pale and toasted with rice-cracker crunch right to the very edges, the delicate crust carries pleasant toasted notes from the scorch marks.
Tucked inside the wafer-thin shell is chunky adzuki bean paste (tsubuan) that lets the natural taste of the beans shine through. Packed tight all the way to the tip of the tail, the filling is soft and juicy, practically bursting out the sides with the first bite. The sweetness is kept modest, balanced with a subtle hint of salt. Combined with the roasty savor of bean paste that has slightly caught on the iron during baking, it offers a rustic deliciousness that disappears in no time.
Keeping its focus purely on this single classic bean-paste taiyaki, the shop makes a convenient stop for a snack or gift while strolling through Edogawabashi and nearby Kagurazaka. Mind the shop's quiet courtesies—photography is restricted inside, and customers are welcomed 1 party at a time—before heading off with a piping-hot, fresh-baked fish in hand.
